Poster redesign

PROJECT
Movie poster redesign finished to an appropriate standard for multi-platform publication (press and web ready). The posters employ two distinct design styles to the 2019 film, 'Parasite'.

I decided to use the peach as a central element in my design as it has symbolic significance and would create a visually memorable aesthetic. The Letter 'I' is extended and manipulated it to look. as if its weaving in-between the peel, similar to how an actual parasite infiltrates its host. Similarly, the film also often explores the concept of living spaces and boundaries using grid lines. This design element also symbolises the rigid structures and divisions in the movie with the peel effect emphasising the multiple layers of the movie. The peach is also a symbol of deception and manipulation throughout the film.

The film features several scenes on the grand staircase within the Park family’s home (social climb and descent, class divisions) which is a recurring motif in the film. I employed Brutalism for poster two as the strong contrast between light and shadow in brutalist aesthetics can represent the tension and moral ambiguity in the film, as well as the hidden aspects of characters’ lives. Colour choice - black often symbolises darkness, secrecy and the subterranean world of the Kim family in the basement.
Red represents elements like tension, conflict and violence + the escalating class struggle + passion and intense motivation that drives the characters, such as the Kim family’s aspiration to improve their socio-economic status. It also reflects the film’s dramatic and suspenseful elements.
